PLA and Microsoft Public WiFi Access Micro Grant Program The Public Library Association (PLA) and Microsoft Corp. are working together to increase access to technology in rural communities during the COVID-19 crisis. In April 2020, Microsoft will provide $120,000 to help public libraries in rural communities with hardware and support to install public WiFi access points on or near library grounds. Unemployment Insurance Relief During COVID-19 Outbreak (US Dept of Labor) On March 18, 2020, President Trump signed into law the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), which provided additional flexibility for state unemployment insurance agencies and additional administrative funding to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law on March 27. It expands states’ ability to provide unemployment insurance for many workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including for workers who are not ordinarily eligible for unemployment benefits. While free to libraries, the extension normally costs $2.95/month for individuals, but because of the COVID-19 crisis, NewsGuard has decided to make it available for free until July 1 — with no strings attached.
